Historical Context
In 416 BC the dispute between Selinos and Segesta about the frontier district was a direct reason for Athenian Sicily expedition; after Athenian defeat the Segestans turned to Carthaginians and they took Selinos in 409 BC, slaying 16,000 and enslaving 5,000.
