Wiliam C. Saslaw and Paul Murdin of the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge suggest that the unusual, inverted and anti-parallel heads actually symbolize the sun god Apollo and relates to the nearly total eclipse of the sun, visible in Istros in 434 BC.
